Research Overview
AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is a cell-permeable nucleoside that activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a master regulator of cellular energy homeostasis. When AMPK is activated, cells shift toward catabolic pathways that generate ATP, including fatty acid oxidation and glucose uptake. Researchers have found that AICAR treatment in animal models can mimic some of the metabolic effects of exercise, making it valuable for studying the molecular mechanisms underlying exercise adaptations and metabolic regulation without the confounding variable of physical activity itself.
