EPO research information

Research Overview

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone primarily produced by the kidneys in response to cellular hypoxia. It acts on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, promoting their survival, proliferation, and differentiation into mature red blood cells. Beyond hematopoiesis, research has revealed EPO receptors in brain, heart, and other tissues, leading to studies of its tissue-protective and anti-apoptotic properties. EPO remains one of the most well-characterized hormones in biomedical research, with extensive understanding of its receptor signaling cascade, including JAK2/STAT5, PI3K/AKT, and RAS/MAPK pathways.
