PT-141 research information
Research Overview
PT-141, scientifically known as Bremelanotide, is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide and the active metabolite of Melanotan 2. Unlike vasoactive compounds that target peripheral blood flow, PT-141 acts centrally as an agonist of the melanocortin receptors MC3R and MC4R located in the hypothalamus and other CNS regions. This central mechanism makes it a uniquely valuable research tool for neuroscientists studying how melanocortin signaling in the brain modulates arousal, motivation, energy homeostasis and behavioral responses. Research models have explored its effects on female and male sexual response physiology, hemorrhagic shock recovery, and CNS-mediated neuroinflammation. Because PT-141 is structurally derived from α-MSH but lacks significant MC1R activity, it allows investigators to isolate MC3R/MC4R-driven outcomes from pigmentation pathways. Its non-vascular, neurally-mediated mechanism of action has placed PT-141 at the center of modern behavioral and reproductive neuroscience research.
