Research Overview
SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a cell-permeable tetrapeptide that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane where it binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid essential for optimal electron transport chain function. By stabilizing cardiolipin interactions with respiratory chain complexes, SS-31 improves mitochondrial efficiency, reduces reactive oxygen species production, and restores bioenergetic capacity. Since mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of aging and numerous diseases, SS-31 has become one of the most important compounds in translational mitochondrial research.
