Research Overview
SNAP-8 (Acetyl Octapeptide-3) is a synthetic peptide that acts as a competitive antagonist of SNAP-25, one of the three SNARE proteins essential for synaptic vesicle fusion and neurotransmitter release. By competing with SNAP-25 for incorporation into the SNARE complex, SNAP-8 reduces the efficiency of neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction. Unlike botulinum toxin which cleaves SNARE proteins, SNAP-8's mechanism is competitive and reversible, making it a gentler research tool for studying the relationship between SNARE complex assembly and neuromuscular signaling.
